Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change my air handler or AC System filter?

Answer: If you have a replaceable/washable filter, AC manufacturers normally recommend to change them out every 2-3 months, depending on use and styles.

What temperature should I keep my thermostat at to conserve the most amount of energy and stay relatively cool?

Answer: 78 degrees is the set point many electric/power companies recommend to optimize cooling efficiency.

Should I have a maintenance plan for my air conditioning system?

Answer: Yes, all manufacturers require at least a once/year maintenance plan in order to honor any warranty claims. Family First offers once/year maintenance plans.

What is a S.E.E.R. rating and how important is it?

Answer: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and means how much electricity the air conditioning unit will use in a year. The higher the S.E.E.R. rating the less electrical consumption the unit uses thereby saving the user money on their energy bills. The industry standard is 13 S.E.E.R. or above. Contact Family First for a full energy evaluation of your Air Conditioning Unit.

Should I have my duct work inspected?

Answer: Yes, your duct work creates a natural environment for the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria which can be harmful to your health and your family’s. Family First recommends a full duct inspection by a qualified technician. We have a fully qualified staff, including an environmental engineer on staff to fully assess your duct work condition and layout to optimize cooling and heating efficiency.
